May Be Apple Will Face Challenges Without His Visionary

The death of Steve Jobs at age 56 comes at a crucial period in the history of personal computing — an industry he almost single-handedly created, first with the Apple II, then the Macintosh, then iTunes and the iPod, and now the iPhone and the iPad.

The new iPhone, dubbed the 4S, will hit stores on Oct. 14. People will camp out for days in advance to get one. Lines will snake around malls.

But for Apple without Jobs, the question is: Will they line up someday for the iPhone 5?

May Be Apple Will Face Challenges Without His Visionary Steve Jobs

Where Jobs was a visionary who could make the details of a new mouse sound almost religious, Cook is an operations guru who made sure Apple pummeled competitors for the best component prices. Nobody is expecting Cook to stand on a stage anytime soon and articulate computing’s future.

Apple has $76 billion in the bank, but if faces challenges from seemingly every corner.

Google wants to crush the iPhone with its Android system. Netflix wants to dominate the world’s living rooms, leaving iTunes behind. Facebook wants to be the window to the Internet, controlling just about everything. And now Amazon is jumping into the tablet business.

Apple comes at this battle not with Jobs, who gave up day-to-day control in August, but with a Southern, soft-spoken gentleman named Tim Cook, who debuted the new iPhone this week to mostly tepid and even some harsh reviews.

Cook will battle Google and the other challengers with Jobs’s legacy stalking his every move — on Wall Street, in Apple’s stores, and in the hearts and minds of technology users around the world. No executive in the history of American business was more closely tied to a company’s brand than Jobs was with Apple.

“The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come,” longtime rival Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, wrote Wednesday night on his personal blog.

A newer generation of tech titans also lionized Jobs, with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg posting a note on his Facebook page: “Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.”

The White House released a statement from President Obama that said, in part: “Steve was among the greatest American innovators brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.”

And Google co-founder Larry Page wrote on his Google Plus account: “I am very, very sad to hear the news about Steve. . . . He was very kind to reach out to me as I became CEO of Google and spend time offering his advice and knowledge even though he was not at all well. My thoughts and Google’s are with his family and the whole Apple family.”

With Jobs gone, the pressure on Cook will be relentless. There already were rumblings in the tech world this week that there wouldn’t have been such a tepid response to the new iPhone if Jobs, not Cook, had been onstage.

To be fair, Apple maps out its projects years in advance, so Jobs was involved with this announcement and probably many to come.

Still, it is not hard to imagine this constant refrain: “Well, it’s because Steve is gone.”

Born on February 24, 1955 and raised in Palo Alto, California, Jobs was one of a handful of figures who straddled two generations that helped transform the small corner of California into the world’s hub for technogical innovation.

Having founded Apple in his family’s garage in 1976 with his friend Steve Wozniak, more than 30 years of innovation resulted in Apple surpassing oil giant Exxon Mobil as the world’s most valuable company earlier this year. In the process Jobs helped reinvent the personal computer, music and mobile phone industries as well as reshape the attitude of millions to technology.

Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, said that “the world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.”

Jobs and Gates had famously testy relations over the years, as Microsoft went from strength to strength, while Jobs’ Apple fortunes faltered before he came back to take crown with iconic products like the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

In a 1994 Rolling Stone interview, Jobs said: “If you say, well, how do you feel about Bill Gates getting rich off some of the ideas that we had … well, you know, the goal is not to be the richest man in the cemetery.

“It’s not my goal anyway,” he said.

Apple Launches New iPhone 4S

Apple unveils its new iphone 4S in gadget world. The iPhone 4S is the flagship and will be available on Oct. 14 in the U.S. It will be carried by AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. yes, Sprint is finally getting the iPhone. There will be a $199 16GB model, a $299 32GB one and an all-new 64GB version for $399. The iPhone 4 will still sell, for $99, in an 8GB version, and there will be a 3GS for free with carrier contract.

There is a new dual-core A5 processor the same one that’s found in the iPad but despite the increased power, there’s improved battery life, including up to 8 hours of 3G talk time. There is also a redesigned smarter antenna. You will also be able to download data twice as fast, up to 14.4 megabits per second, similar to many “4G” phones on AT&T.

There’s an 8-megapixel camera 3264 x 2448 pixels. But it’s not just crammed-in pixels, says Phil Schiller, worldwide marketing VP. The new camera can gather 73 percent more light per pixel than the iPhone 4, using the new kind of CMOS. There are five custom lenses, and lens aperture of f/2.4, which is better for low light.

The same camera is used to take 1080p HD video, with real-time video image stabilization. And with AirPlay, you can do HD wireless or HDMI video mirroring from phone to the TV. Pretty awesome, actually.

The key feature for the iPhone 4S is Siri, an assistant that replaces the not-so-hot Voice Command function. You get to it by holding down the home button. It’s true artificial intelligence. You can ask “Do I need a raincoat today?” and Siri replies “It sure looks like rain today,” and brings up the weather tile. You can use it to set alarms, read messages, search for restaurants, and other stuff. It may sound conventional, but I’ll be honest, it’s pretty amazing in the demo.
